The First Non-Army To Become NDA Commandant And Chief Of Defence Staff In Nigeria’s History

Before Al-amin Musa Daggash became the commandant of The Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna and the Chief of Defence Staff those two posts were exclusively occupied only by Army officers.

However, in 1994,he became the first and only non-army officer till date to become the commandant of NDA and in 1998 ,he became the first non-army to become the Chief of Defence Staff.

The man Al-amin Daggash was born in 1942 in Kirenowa, Marte local government of Borno State. He is of the Shuwa Arab ethnic stock and one of the children of former permanent secretary Musa Daggash .

In August 1963, he was enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force as an officer cadet and was part of the first batch of Nigerian Air Force officer cadets.

He rose through the ranks and was appointed Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Training Command of the Nigerian Air Force in 1990 and Chief of Air Force Logistics and Communications branch at the service HQ between 1992 and 1994.

Afterwards, he was promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshal in December 1991 and was appointed as the deputy commandant and subsequently commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was later promoted to the rank of Air Marshal on the 10th of June 1998 and retired from service on the 29th of May 1999 as the Chief of Defence Staff of the entire Nigeria military formations.
